Hundertwasser toilet in kawakawa

This magnificent toilet is really one of a kind. It was desinged and created by Frederick Hundertwasser an Austrian painter and architect who fell in love with New Zealand in the 1970's while showing his work. He made the bay of island his second home and bought a house just east of Kawakawa. After a Kawakawa community meeting about the renovation of toilets in 1998 Hundertwasser offered his design services and created this amazing facility. It is now a major attraction in the town and from the pictures below you can see why. An impeccable wall of glass bottles at the back lets in a beautiful array of blue and green light. Various sized tiles line the floor and the walls and antique farm tools are strategically placed on a gate that acts as the front door. If ever there was a toilet to visit this would be the one.

Mozart room at the Gingerbread Cottage

First I have to say that the Gingerbread cottage is an ideal little haven for a weekend getaway with your lover (wink) or just some friends. We fit 3 very comfortably in the Mozart room which holds one full bed and one single bed. The Austrian woman who started the B&B decorated the Mozart room with what else but Mozart memorabilia. There are several Mozart portraits and items from his home town in Austria. But enough about the room this blog is all about the potties!

The bathroom in the Mozart room is adorable. Although the decor is something you might imagine in grandma's house, it was perfect for the cottage. Floral fabric lined toilet seat with matching window and shower curtains you will feel at ease doing all your business. One thing I will warn is the shower... It's tiny and unless you are my height (5'5") or shorter you may be reenacting the shower scene from the movie "Elf". Also in traditional GB and commonwealth fashion the sink is outside of the toilet. Which is great for multiple guests. While one person tends to their Mohawk the other can tinkle or shower in peace.

Victoria public urinals

If you ever find yourself busting to tinkle in Victoria B.C., a male and stumbling home to your gorgeous B&B than stop at none other than the public urinals! That's right folks the thoughtful peeps of Victoria were thinking of you. Make sure you aim... there is not a lot of room for error. Also if you happen to be traveling with 3 other guys don't worry you won't have to fight for who goes first! You can all go at the same time! No that is not some sick joke, these public urinals are partitioned off for 4 people. Look how lucky you are!

The Great Outdoors: Goat Lake

Meandering through an easy trail, alongside a swift river with a breathtaking waterfall at the top would make anyone feel the need to tinkle. 2 1/2 hours hiking next to rushing water will wear a hole in your "I can hold it 5 more minutes" psyche. However, if you have picked Goat Lake for your backpacking needs fear not, they do equip the campground with not one but two toilets! As I set my pack down, in one of the last camping spots available at this popular backpacker destination, all I could think about was tinkling. I followed the first sign to tinkle-land; a pictogram of an outhouse. Up and up I climbed still not seeing the toilet. I passed another sign which read "toilet", however still no sign of this outhouse. A couple more steps reveled to my horror a wooden box. Hmmm.... "This can't be it, there are no walls!" I thought to myself. I walked over and opened what appeared to be a lid. As I lifted it became clear, this was the toilet. However open and wall-less this toilet was, it was far enough away from any campsite to feel extreme paranoia as a dropped my drawers. It was one step up from peeing in the woods, however there were no pangs of guilt for using toilet paper.
*note- Goat Lake is extremely beautiful and it's a great day hike or over night weekend spot.

University Bookstore

If you find yourself in university district at one of the many cheap and easy restaurants or music stores but can't bring yourself to use their grungy unkempt bathrooms then head to the University Bookstore where you will find a clean quiet tucked away restroom for your tinkling needs. Although they say you need to be a customer to use their facilities, it's easy to browse the magazine isle or other various departments for 5 minutes before or after your journey to toilet-land.
